You get an alarming call from a strange number. It’s the local hospital and they tell you that your spouse was involved in a motorcycle accident just a few moments ago. Suddenly, everything rushes to your mind at once. Will they be ok? How bad was the accident? What does this mean for the future of your family? You rush to be by his side only to find out that the other driver was negligent and your spouse sustained serious injuries. He can’t return to work for awhile and will need a lot of extra help.

What are you to do?

Lots of women have been in this position before. When your partner suddenly gets injured, you’ve essentially lost the assistance of your better half. That means it’s up to you to handle everything. But where do you start? Here’s some advice:

  • Talk with the doctors – your husband’s care is by far the most important thing. Talk with the doctors to find out what the extent of his injuries was, how long he’ll need to recover, and what the course of action is for recovery. Get a list of medications and instructions so you can do as advised when you get home.
  • Contact his employers – if your spouse has to be out of work for awhile you should contact their employer to notify them. Set up a meeting to discuss everything and sign the necessary paperwork.
  • Consult an attorney – personal injury cases can be difficult to manage on your own. You and your partner can have a better understanding of what your rights are and what the next steps should be by talking with a motorcycle accident lawyer.
  • File a claim – now that you have more information on the accident, your husband’s health status, information from his employer, and the support of an attorney you’re ready to file an insurance claim. Be sure to provide as many details as possible as well as any information that will support your claim including photos or video footage from the scene, witness statements, the police report, medical records, and any notification from the employer. A claims adjuster will review the information and determine what the offer should be.

The rest of this process can be finished by your hired attorney. They can work with the insurance company to negotiate a settlement and file the required documentation for a lawsuit if necessary. Your focus can now turn to your spouse and his needs. Here are a few quick tips to help him recover.

  • Make sure he’s eating foods that heal the body
  • Help him exercise within reason to strengthen his body
  • Help him keep all his doctor’s appointments
  • Communicate with him often
  • Find a way for the kids to spend quality time with him
  • Pay attention to signs of depression and get him further help if necessary
  • Most importantly, take care of you.

When you or your family are involved in an accident the news can be devastating. As much as you may want to break down, it is important for you to be the rock right now and provide assistance to help him recover. First, make sure that you’ve taken care of the legalities of his accident so he can receive compensation. Then, focus your attention on your own well-being and your family. Together, you’ll get through it all.
