How to create mindfulness in your family

If your family home could do with a little more calm and rest from time to time, then you may want to instill a little mindfulness into your everyday routine. Particularly with larger families, it can feel like a never-ending task of sorting lunches, getting laundry organized and ensuring everybody is out of the door in time for school, activities and social gatherings. If you’re looking to restore a positive atmosphere or cultivate some mindfulness in the family home, then here are a few tips.

Get involved with sports activities

If you have kids who constantly need to burn off some steam, then it might be that they would be better placed in a sports club or group activity. Chatting to your kids about what sports they would enjoy and seeing if they would benefit from spending some weekly time at an activity center could help prevent them from expending their energy indoors.

Have a quiet space

If you’re worried that your family home is just too hectic to start cultivating mindfulness, then it could be a wise idea to create a little quiet corner for family members to go and spend time in. Treat this area as a no-go place for games and loud noises – you might just find more and more family members using it for a moment of calm.

Try cooking as a family

It can hard to convince everyone in your family to suddenly take up soothing, artistic activities overnight. Instead, try and encourage members of your family to take part in activities which are still part of your everyday routine, but everyone can learn from. Showing kids how to prepare vegetables and meat safely and bind ingredients together to make a cake will get them away from their phones and spending time with loved ones.

Address significant issues

For some families, sometimes it’s not just an issue of getting enough sleep or cooking together. Sometimes a member of the family can be suffering from a long-term problem that requires support and guidance from everyone around them. Helping them to find a program that suits them on a service such as Forwardrecovery.com, could help get them the support they need.

Bring it back to basics

Multi-tasking is for adults: giving children devices where they can hop from one game to the next while watching TV might not be good for their attention spans. Encouraging your kids to enjoy games and tasks one at a time could help them develop their ability to focus. This attention to detail on a craft project or building something could create mindfulness that kids understand.

You might not be able to bring your home to a meditative state, but by taking a look at what could be improved might go some way to helping your family become much more mindful. Helping your most energetic children find hobbies they enjoy, and giving your quieter kids a place they can go to find some escapism will help create an environment where everyone is aware of each other’s needs.
